National Urban League Launches "Counteroffensive" Against Trump Attack on MBDA

March 18, 2025 — The National Urban League today launched a counteroffensive against President Trump's latest move to eliminate opportunity for disadvantaged business owners by gutting the Minority Business Development Agency."The executive order is part of the administration's single-minded determination to shut down every possible pathway to economic equity for disadvantaged and marginalized Americans," National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said. "The mission of the MBDA — which it shares with the National Urban League — is 'to unlock the country’s full economic potential.'  It is clear the Trump administration actively opposes that mission, seeking instead not only to preserve the barriers that impede the nation's prosperity, but expand and reinforce those barriers."The National Urban League waged a successful 10-year fight to elevate the MBDA to a statutory agency because its role in driving economic equity and closing the racial wealth gap is irreplaceable.  In fiscal year 2023 alone, the agency facilitated $1.2 billion in capital, secured $1.6 billion in contracts, and generated or saved more than 14,000 jobs."The American economy as a whole is stronger and more resilient due to the work of the MBDA," Morial said. "The National Urban League and our allies will not stand by and allow this administration to reverse five and a half decades of progress on economic equity."
