On June 13, 2024, the Urban League of Westchester County hosted its Mental Health Summit, "From Trauma to Triumph," at the Sonesta White Plains Downtown hotel. This event brought together community leaders, health professionals, policymakers, and advocates to address the intersection of mental health, racial trauma, and substance abuse.
The day began with a warm welcome from Sorraya E. Sampson, President and CEO of the Urban League of Westchester County, followed by a presentation from Trevor Payne, Director of Drug & Alcohol/ Addiction Services at the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health (WCDCMH). Payne's compelling statistics on mental health and substance abuse set the stage for the day's discussions.
Tracie M. Gardner, Co-Director of the National Black Harm Reduction Network, delivered the morning keynote. Her extensive experience in public health and substance use provided deep insights into the impact of the War on Drugs on Black communities. Gardner also moderated a Fireside Chat and Q&A session with Sharon Thomas, MSW, Patrick Quinn, and a special guest, focusing on substance abuse trauma.
After a networking lunch, Dr. Maysa Akbar, a leading expert on racial trauma and DEI, delivered a powerful afternoon keynote. Her work, including the Urban Trauma™ framework, offered profound insights into systemic racism and mental health. An afternoon panel, moderated by Geoffrey Streat and featuring Jennifer Lackard, Beatrice Hirsch, and Dr. Andrew Bell, discussed mental health trauma and provided practical solutions for underserved communities.
The summit concluded with a book signing by Dr. Akbar for her best-seller "Urban Trauma," and a reception where attendees could connect and reflect on the day's discussions. Guests left with swag bags, including a copy of the book, offering resources for continued healing and empowerment.
